Important Notes

  • All players are guaranteed playing time regardless of skill level.
  • Volunteer coaches and team parents are essential to our success — get involved!
  • Safety and sportsmanship are top priorities in every division.

We recognize that some players may be ready to play at a higher division based on their skill level and baseball experience. Families may request an optional player evaluation to determine if their child is ready to “play up” in the next age group.

  • Evaluations are based on: skill, maturity, safety, and readiness
  • Eligibility: Player must be near the top of the age range for their current division
  • Approval: Final decision made by league officials and coaching staff

In some cases, a player may also be evaluated to remain in a lower division if their skill level, experience, or confidence suggests they would benefit from additional development time. This ensures a positive experience where every player can grow at their own pace and enjoy the game safely.

How the Draft Works for Maumee Little League

Who Can Play
Any child who lives within the Maumee School District, Maumee city limits, or attends a school inside league boundaries is eligible.

Tryouts
All players attend tryouts where coaches watch them hit, throw, field, and run. This helps coaches see their skills before the draft.

Legacy Players

  • If a child is the son/daughter of a manager, coach, or has a sibling already in the league, they are considered a “Legacy Player.”
  • These players are evaluated by all managers and must be drafted in the round they are rated for.

Players Who Miss Tryouts

  • If a player can’t make tryouts, managers will still rate them.
  • Their names then go into a drawing so teams are assigned fairly.

Siblings

  • Brothers or sisters entering the draft together are rated the same way as Legacy Players.
  • Once one sibling is drafted, the other automatically goes to the same team in the round they were rated for.

The Draft

  • Coaches draw numbers to decide the draft order.
  • Odd rounds go in order; even rounds go in reverse order (so the team that picked last gets to go first next round).
  • The draft continues until all players are selected.

Coaches’ Kids

  • If a manager wants a specific parent as their coach, they must request it before the draft. If approved, that child is treated as a Legacy Player.

Team Placement

  • Once drafted, a player stays with that team for the season (unless traded or released with board approval).
  • Trades can only happen on draft day.

Late Sign-Ups

  • Kids who register late will be added to teams in draft order, making sure ages are spread evenly across teams.

Replacing Players

  • If a player leaves mid-season, the team will add the next available late applicant.

In short: kids try out, coaches evaluate, special rules exist for siblings and coaches’ kids, then teams are chosen in a fair draft process.
